If you’ve ever tried to sing in your car or even in the bathroom, does your voice break, squeak or struggle to hit a high note? The truth is, you need some training or lessons to learn to reach those high notes. It does not come easily, unless you are one of those unusually gifted talents.
Most people don't know it, but they can really abuse their voices without knowing it. For example, when you shout, talk too much, or the vocal cords may be damaged in time. When we speak to others we only use a limited range of sound. We don't sing when we speak so the range of sound does not develop further.
If you want to sound like a true professional singer, you must be able to reach some high notes. Believe it or not, it’s fairly easy to extend your voice range with regular practice when you combine the chest voice and the head voice.
What is the chest voice? It’s the deeper voice we all use when we speak with other people in everyday conversations. When you use the head voice, the sound becomes higher, but the head voice is not the voice that you will work on to extend your vocal range.
Instead, you will work on your mixed voice (the combination of the chest and head voices). Your voice teacher can show you how to do this, or you can learn this with an online voice course. But remember that singing is an art, and when you sing with inspiration and with feeling you can “feel” the note you need to sing. And with repeated practice the right way, your range will naturally develop and expand to reach higher notes.
